🥂 Spioenkop 1900 Chardonnay 2022 brings the freshness of Elgin together with the texture of oak-fermented Chardonnay. This dry South African white offers an appealing balance between clearly defined fruit and savoury complexity. It is a thoughtful choice for a dinner where the wine should complement the food, while still offering enough detail to enjoy on its own.

🌿 Made by Koen Roose at Spioenkop, the 1900 range explores grape varieties closely associated with Elgin. The estate’s hillside setting and the region’s cool conditions give this Chardonnay its restrained character. The name 1900 recalls the Battle of Spioenkop, linking the bottle’s distinctive cannon illustration and historical identity with a contemporary expression of South African winemaking.

🍋 Citrus and peach form the centre of the profile, alongside ripe stone fruit, melon and subtle almond tones. The palate has a taut, focused feel, with lively acidity keeping the fruit precise. Oak adds depth and a gently nutty, savoury dimension, while the overall impression remains fresh and composed. This is an engaging style for people who enjoy Chardonnay with structure, integrated wood and a lingering finish.

🪵 Fermentation takes place in barrel, followed by ten months of maturation in French oak, with 30% new barrels. This combination lends complexity without overwhelming the grape’s character. The wine is particularly rewarding when served lightly chilled and allowed a little time in the glass, so the fruit and oak can unfold together.

🍽️ Try it with grilled fish, roast poultry or creamy pasta. These are suggested pairings that suit its acidity and oak texture; gentle herbs, a little butter and restrained seasoning let the wine’s detail shine. Serve at around 10–12°C in a white-wine glass for a relaxed dinner or a considered gift.
